Resilience Constellation (UK) and Ambio (México) are pleased to announce a joint programme of work to assess the climate resilience status of coffee producers in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
Chiapas is the main coffee producing state in Mexico with 170,000 smallholder farms producing around 1.4 million sacks of coffee per year from an area of approximately 240,000 hectares.
Coffee production in Chiapas, in common with many other parts of the world, is increasingly affected by climate change and farmers are facing an ongoing need to adapt their systems to remain viable.
Resilience Constellation, based in Edinburgh, Scotland is a ratings company pioneering the systematic assessment of climate resilience in the food and agriculture sectors. Now that governments and financial institutions are starting to commit resources to maintain food security and rural livelihoods in the face of climate and other environmental changes it is essential to have metrics on the status of adaptive and transformative measures being taken up by farmers and the effectiveness of those interventions.
Ambio is a co-operative that helps farmers and rural communities in the state of Chiapas, Mexico deal with environmental challenges such as wildfires, sustainable production improvements and the management of greenhouse gas emissions. Ambio has been involved in the formulation of state level climate adaptation planning, co-ordinated by the state government. Ambio is also widely known for its work on agroforestry development under the Scolel Té – Plan Vivo project.
The joint work to configure and test resilience ratings in Chiapas represents an important collaboration between the UK and Mexico in the area of climate change adaptation.
